A Solution to Extreme Poverty: Millennium Villages

In September 2000, all the world’s leaders agreed to cut extreme poverty, hunger, and disease by the year 2015. Sub-Saharan Africa remains far behind in reaching these goals.

In 2004, the first Millennium Village in Sauri, Kenya was founded to prove that the poorest people in rural areas could lift themselves out of poverty. Through a multi-targeted approach that addresses basic needs in agriculture, health, education, and infrastructure – all at the same time – the Millennium Villages are proving this is possible.

There are now more than 80 villages reaching the lives of 400,000 people. But it will take global cooperation on all levels to transform an entire continent.
