The Smithsonian National Postal Museum William H. Gross Stamp Galley:
A New Home for a National Treasure
The Simthsonian National Postal Museum possesses a stamp collection unequalled for its breadth, depth, and historical importance. From small beginnings in 1886, the National Philatelic Collection has grown into a world-class holding of six million objects. Today it comprises a spectacular array of invert errors, essays, and proofs; the nation’s most complete collection of U.S. revenue stamps; and hundreds of individual specialized collections of worldwide philatelic materials. It is truly a national treasure.
The new William H. Gross Stamp Gallery will allow the museum to feature this incomparable collection as a reflection of American identity and history. Its exhibits will educate and inspire hundreds of thousands of visitors each year, offering them the opportunity to experience the thrill of philately. The Simthsonian National Postal Museum is especially grateful to Bill and Sue Gross for their generosity in making this long-held dream a reality.
