William H. Gross, ever since he became publicly known as a stamp collector, has continually shown not only what an accomplished philatelist he is, but what special people both he, and his wife Sue, are through their remarkable acts of generosity.
In June of 2007, Mr. & Mrs. Gross decided to start the process of selling his many foreign collections through Spink Shreves Galleries, with the intent of donating the entire sales proceeds to various charities or non-profit organizations that have special meaning to them. To date, Spink Shreves has sold three of his remarkable collections – Great Britain (June 2007), Scandinavia (May 2008) and British Empire (October 2008). The three sales together have totaled an impressive $12,209,905 – with every dollar having been given to two incredible charities, namely Doctors Without Borders (Médecins Sans Frontières) and Millennium Villages Project at the Earth Institute.
Now, in yet another extraordinary gesture, they have decided to sell two more collections, his Confederate States Postmasters’ Provisionals and his British North America. This time the beneficiary will be the Smithsonian National Postal Museum – these proceeds will be used to create a new 12,000-square-foot gallery that will be named in his honor. The new gallery will give the National Postal Museum public space at the street level. When completed in 2012, this unique stamp gallery will be the finest of its kind in the world.
While Mr. Gross has been selling portions of his collections, he still will continue collecting, buying, selling, “swapping” and exhibiting his United States stamps as this is truly a life-long hobby for him, while also continuing as Founder and co-Chief Investment Officer of PIMCO. He has been associated with PIMCO since its inception in 1971 and currently oversees the management of over $850 billion of fixed income securities. He is the author of numerous articles and books on the bond market and has frequently appeared in national publications and media. Additionally, he holds a bachelor’s degree from Duke University and an MBA from the UCLA Graduate School of Business. He and his family live in Laguna Beach, California.
“It is the hope of Bill and Sue Gross that all collectors will aggressively participate in these two auctions, not only to be able to add wonderful rarities to their collections, but with all sales proceeds being given to the Smithsonian National Postal Museum, collectors will be helping to ensure that future generations of collectors will be created and introduced to the hobby we all enjoy.”
